Sunny is an amazing, sweet tempered seven year old gaited Curly gelding. I have owned him since he was three, and he has been nothing but a delight. I am only selling him due to not being able to spend as much time with him as he deserves. During the time that I have owned him we have done trail riding, shows, a parade, the Illinois Horse Fair demo, and lots of bareback pleasure riding. I have even ridden him through town a few times.
A testament to his temperament is that probably 90% of the riding I have done with him is bareback with a halter and lead rope in lieu of a bridle. He loves to eat and if left to himself would stand eating grass all day; yet with a little tug on the lead rope and a nudge with your heel he is ready to go off on an adventure. He remained a lot more calm and collected than me when we spotted a cougar right in front of us one day, and he brought me home safely. I can't say enough about how wonderful Sunny is! The video is unfortunately fairly low-quality, but it shows what I believe is the essence of Sunny's personality: gentle, willing, and ready to put up with all kinds of crazy human ideas. It was from the summer of 2008, but I could do the exact same thing right now and he would respond in the same way- "you want to do what? oh... okay, sounds fine to me."
He would be fine by himself or with others. He has always been on the bottom of the pecking order and generally preferred human company to other horses. Sunny bonds very quickly with people, but is not one of those one person only horses.
My focus was never on showing, so he would require some work to get him ready for competition, mainly in the area of getting leads at the canter. He would also probably need some work on going through water since he has never liked going through puddles. Those are the only two negative things I can think of, and knowing his personality it wouldn't take much to change them if that is desired. Basically, he is ready to go in any direction you would choose. He could easily be an outstanding 4-H horse, or a trail buddy- his favorite mode of travel when being ridden out is a super smooth, easy going slow gait. He is small enough to not be intimidating for kids, and big enough to carry most adults with ease. Sunny is a Mary Poppins horse: "practically perfect in every way.
